Profile Information

I am a
facilitator, course participant, student, group camping professional
Describe your involvement or interest in adventure-based experiential learning.
Aside from majoring in Outdoor Education, I have spent the past 7 summers working at a YMCA summer camp at different positions. I also work at an adventure challenge coarse helping groups with communication, teamwork, and problem solving. The YMCA has also hired me as assistant director for a middle school after school program. In this position i have created a group for the kids that allows them to learn about the outdoors and help their interests grow. I also have used my position to create camping trips and other outdoor related field trips. Now I am working for the Department of Game, Fish and Parks as a naturalist intern.
What are your goals, and how can The Challenge community help you achieve them?
I have a strong passion for the outdoors and youth. I want to learn all I can and get a lot more experience.

I feel that everybody has a different aspect on how they look at things. So input from the community would benefit my programs and help me in my future career.

Andy,

Of course! This is an open workshop. I'm off to ACA National tomorrow and will be back from Florida on 2/26. I'll get in touch after that.

Andy what we do is education. By letting the group struggle some is a good idea. Although you as a faciltator must also teach. Teaching them shows and models processes. Many groups that you facilitate have never been exposed to problem solving or ELC models. Giving them an initiative and allowing them to fail only makes them re-learn failed beahaviors, I am not sure of many facilitators that are alright with groups increasing their failed behaviors. The reason people do "team building" is to learn how to build as a team. If they had to model, leadership, and development of sucess in rope handcuffs they would not need your wisdom and facilitation.
I do not encourage you to show them immediately. Although you need to facilitate the steps for understanding. once they learn the method you faciliate the transferance back to their lives (work, school, etc...)
By the "let 'em struggle" method you are seen as a "SUPER HERO" who knows the answer and the participants feel viewed as "STUPID HUMANS" who cannot figure this out.
That is NOT TEAM BUILIDING. Teach models, model structure, let them struggle. Teach them.

Thanks Andy. We feel very blessed with our program and our facilities. I was involved in starting the first Jumonville adventure program over 35 years ago.

Andy Te Slaa,
rope cuffs is one of those classic activities that has infinate possible facilitator outcomes.
Generally after about 7-10 minutes or when I see the crowd getting restless - I walk into the crowd and start randomly and quickly illustrate the solution.
By illustrating is fast and making it seem easy - I transfer it back to leadership communication. As leaders we have firm concept inside our heads of our vision, although how well do those we lead understand what we are asking and showing them?
Contact me and I will be happt to share more.
Also here is a link to a article I wrote about this team building initiative.
